 Internal Medicine Residency Program

Preliminary Year Residency Program

The UPMC Preliminary Year Residency Program is fully integrated with the UPMC Internal Medicine Categorical Residency Training Program. Patient care responsibilities and on-call schedules of preliminary year trainees are identical to those of categorical program trainees, except that continuity clinic is not required.

While the schedule of each preliminary year resident has the basic structure shown below, individual schedules are modified to meet the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for eachsubspecialty. In neurology, for example, the preliminary year residents spend six rotations on general medicine floors and consults and one rotation each in the emergency department (ED), intensive care unit (ICU), and hematology/oncology service. In addition, they complete two electives chosen from any of the subspecialty divisions of the Department of Medicine. Only preliminary year residents in neurology, anesthesia, and radiology complete a rotation in the ED.

If the participants in the preliminary year program subsequently choose to switch to internal medicine, they can continue on to their second year without having to extend or repeat any portion of their first year.

Mentors are provided for all preliminary year residents to help guide them through career decisions.

The Department of Medicine offers 16 preliminary year positions each year, 7 of which are reserved for individuals who match in neurology. The preliminary year program has its own NRMP code and accepts applications only through the ERAS system.
