UPMC MEP Transitional Year Research Experience and Journal Club
- Residents may elect up to one research block during their Transitional Year at UPMC MEP in which to start or to continue research projects or to establish a mentor within their primary field.
- Each resident presents once per year at the monthly Journal Club where they critique the strengths and weaknesses of their chosen article or project. Afterwards, the residents reflect on and discuss how the information will change or affect their approach to patient care. Skills involved in understanding and critiquing the medical literature are further reinforced.
- Examples of topics covered over the past two years include the use of removable IVC filters, the basics of hospice care, use of perioperative beta blockers and the use of CT colonoscopy for the diagnosis and staging of colon cancer.
- Transitional residents who perform research months have presented their projects at these meetings including basic science bench research, case reports and case series and publications completed during their Transitional Year here at UPMC MEP Montefiore. Please see the topics/bibliography below.
