UPMC Shadyside Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome

Welcome to the UPMC Shadyside Internal Medicine Residency Program website. Our program offers a unique hybrid training experience that gives you the best of both a community and university hospital experience to best prepare you for the career path you choose. As a community-based program our residents develop the skills and knowledge base unique to the practice of medicine in a community hospital setting, where the majority of internists ultimately practice. The university hospital resources contribute to the diverse clinical experiences and outstanding research opportunities that well prepare our graduates to go on to sub-specialty fellowship programs, hospitalist and primary care practices and academic/research careers. Yet residency training today requires more than good clinical experiences and research opportunities. The core skill sets necessary to practice internal medicine have dramatically evolved as the health care system has grown more complex. To this end, we are training our residents to become competent in the use of information systems, improving processes of care and patient safety, incorporating evidence in the care of patients and communicating with colleagues, patients and families. As one of 21 institutions around the country chosen to participate in the Education Innovations Project, the University of Pittsburgh Internal Medicine Programs bring together the resources of a leading academic health center, nationally recognized faculty and a top ranked health care system with a commitment to quality. We hope you will explore our program further and consider a visit to see it first hand.
