2009-2010 House Staff Salary Levels

The following salary levels have been approved for residents and fellows who will be training in UPMCMEP residency/fellowship programs July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010.

UPMC Oakland Based Programs

Vacation: All house officers receive 3, one week blocks of paid vacation during the year, as well as 5 days of paid holiday vacation during December.

Maternity and Paternity Leave: House officers are allowed 4 weeks of maternity leave and 1 week of paternity leave. Often, residents will schedule 2 weeks of their vacation to start immediately after the maternity or paternity leave.

Book Fund: House officers in their first year are entitled to a $300 educational allowance. Second and third years are entitled to a $500 book fund stipend upon completion of appropriate requirements.

White Coats and Scrubs: All house officers receive 2 white coats and 2 pairs of scrubs their intern year and 2 white coats and 2 pairs of scrubs each year thereafter.

Meal Tickets: Meal tickets valued at $10 are provided when a trainee is on a "regularly scheduled shift of twenty-four (24) hours or more on-call in the hospital overnight."

Free Parking: Parking is provided free of charge at all of the main hospital sites.

Conference Fund: All house officers are eligible for travel expenses and conference fees if their work is accepted for presentation at a recognized medical conference.

Tax Deferred Annuity Plan: House officers can elect to participate in a supplemental retirement annuity plan.

Insurance and Disability:

- Health Insurance: UPMC Health Plan Enhanced Access HMO Health Insurance is provided at no cost to house officers and their eligible dependent(s). Vision coverage is included in the Health Plan.

- Dental Insurance: Met-Life Dental is provided at no cost to house officers. Dependent selection requires the trainee to pay a monthly contribution.

- Short-Term Disability Leave: The hospitals of the University Health Center provide disability leave for up to 12 weeks of complete disability, when application for long-term coverage is made. The house officer must provide proof that he or she is under the care of a physician. Maternity leave is covered under short-term disability leave.

- Long-Term Disability Insurance: The University Health Center provides a disability insurance policy following 12 weeks of total disability.

- Life Insurance: The University Health Center provides group life insurance that includes accidental death and dismemberment. The amount is equal to the house officer's annual salary rounded upward to the nearest thousand dollars.

- Medical Malpractice Insurance: The hospitals cover the cost of group malpractice liability insurance for Health Center-related activities.

It is important when a new resident begins their study at SHY they feel welcome, safe, and comfortable. We strive to make the resident area as close to a home environment as possible. The lounge is equipped with four computers where each resident can access important patient information, play games to relieve stress or search the Net. Also, there is a Samsung 46" HDMI Input, DLP HDTV with DVD for entertainment. Stocked refrigerator for when you are on-call. Coffee machine, which dispenses fresh brewed coffee by the cup, hot chocolate, cappuccino, mochaccino, espresso, assorted cold beverages, snacks and munchies, all at no charge.

All equipment rests upon a Durafloor 8MM black

Call rooms are private which offer prime sleep time or quiet study. Each is equipped with new mattress and box spring, bed pillows, Velluxe blanket, brushed stainless bedside lamp with base switch. New windows have been installed along with new air conditioners for the summer and individual thermostats for the winter.

Shower rooms are equipped with body soap, shampoo and conditioner, disposable pre-pasted toothbrushes, dental floss, and mouthwash.
