Welcome to the Web site for internal medicine residency programs at UPMC Shadyside.
Our programs offer a unique training experience that combines the best of both a community setting and a university hospital setting, preparing you for your future career in medicine. Our residents develop the skills and knowledge base needed to practice medicine in a community hospital setting, where the majority of internists ultimately practice. The university hospital resources contribute to the diverse clinical experiences and outstanding research opportunities that prepare our graduates for careers in primary care practice, hospitalist practice, or subspecialties and for fellowships and academic research opportunities.
The core skill sets necessary to practice internal medicine have dramatically evolved as the health care system has grown more complex. To this end, residents are trained to become competent in using information systems, improving processes of care and patient safety, incorporating evidence-based medicine in the care of patients, and communicating with colleagues, patients, and families. As one of 21 U.S. institutions chosen to participate in the Educational Innovation Project of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the University of Pittsburgh brings together the resources of a leading academic health center, nationally recognized faculty, and a top-ranked health care system with a commitment to quality. Exploring our Web site will introduce you to the many opportunities that await you here at UPMC Shadyside and within the UPMC Health System.
