The Osteopathic Internship Program at UPMC Shadyside welcomed its first class of interns in July 2005. The program is a member of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine MEDNet OPTI. The internship builds on the traditions set by our programs that have been accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), specifically our ACGME residency in internal medicine and our ACGME/AOA residency in family medicine. We offer up to 4 positions, with preference going to individuals interested in remaining in these programs. The intern year will fulfill both the AOA requirement and the first year of residency training.

UPMC Shadyside is known throughout the region as a tertiary referral center whose focus remains on the care of the patient. Our institution prides itself on treating the "whole person" and uses a multidisciplinary model in which patients, physicians, and staff all contribute to comprehensive care. UPMC Shadyside offers core rotations in inpatient medicine, critical care medicine, inpatient cardiology, hematology/oncology, and emergency medicine.
For individuals interested in family medicine, in addition to strong rotations at Shadyside, our affiliations with the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC offer comprehensive training in pediatrics, care of the newborn, and obstetrics.
Numerous elective and research opportunities are available both on the Shadyside campus and the Oakland campus and in virtually all medical subspecialties.

Future Career Plans: I am considering either a fellowship or general medicine as a hospitalist or PCP, essentially keeping all my options open. I hope to experience as many different specialties as possible during my residency and to choose something that I love and am passionate about. Why I Chose UPMC Shadyside: I enjoyed every rotation I had at Shadyside during medical school and knew this was where I belonged. I grew up in Pittsburgh and was so excited to find a program here that I loved. I appreciate the diversity of a community hospital setting with the experiences and resources of a large academic program. The faculty are exceptional teachers and provide a great learning environment. The program is extremely successful in fellowship placement as well as employment directly after residency. Even after just a few weeks here, I know that I made the right choice! |

Future Career Plans: I am currently undecided of my future goals, but am continuing to explore my options. Why I Chose UPMC Shadyside: I attended the University of Pittsburgh for my undergraduate education and quickly fell in love with the city. During medical school I was fortunate to have the opportunity to come back to Pittsburgh and do several clinical rotations at UPMC Shadyside. From the start I was impressed by the quality of the residents I worked with at Shadyside. They were examples of the type of resident I hoped to one day be -- very caring and attentive to their patients, eager to learn, and possessing strong work ethics. Additionally, the camaraderie among the residents was extremely evident, which was important to me considering the amount of time you spend together. Finally, the emphasis on teaching and evidence-based medicine has motivated me to learn as much as I can so that I can become the best physician possible for my patients. |

There is a wide diversity of pathology, strong academic and clinical teaching, and incomparable camaraderie among the residents, faculty, and entire staff. Additionally, I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and I am fully aware of what a wonderful place it is. Therefore, I was very excited to find a program that allowed me to return home while receiving impeccable training in the field of internal medicine. |

However, I plan to continue to explore my options because my mind may change! Why I Chose UPMC Shadyside: I grew up in Pittsburgh. For professional and personal reasons, I wanted to stay and train in my hometown so that some day I may be able to establish a practice in my community. I have always been aware of the outstanding reputation of UPMC Shadyside. As a medical student I was fortunate enough to have clinical rotations at Shadyside. I had a wonderful experience. My attendings were incredibly intelligent, inspiring, and encouraging. When I came for my interview, I felt like this was the place where I would be welcome and could thrive. I was drawn to the combination of a community hospital and a large, well-respected academic medical center. There are various training institutions that offer endless career possibilities.
