Welcome to the UPMC Shadyside Internal Medicine Residency Program website. Our program offers a unique hybrid training experience in the best of both a community and university hospital setting preparing you for your future career in medicine. As a community-based program, our residents develop the skills and knowledge base unique to the practice of medicine in a community hospital setting, where the majority of internists ultimately practice. The university hospital resources contribute to the diverse clinical experiences and outstanding research opportunities that prepare our graduates for careers in primary care or hospitalist practices, subspecialties, fellowship opportunities and/or academic research opportunities. The core skill sets necessary to practice internal medicine have dramatically evolved as the health care system has grown more complex. To this end, residents are trained to become competent in the use of information systems, improving processes of care and patient safety, incorporating evidence in the care of patients and communicating with colleagues, patients and families.
