The Osteopathic Internship at UPMC Shadyside welcomed its first class of interns in July of 2005. The program is a member of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Med-Net OPTI. The Internship builds on the traditions set by our ACGME program in Internal Medicine and combined AOA/ACGME residency in Family Medicine. We offer up to 6 positions, with preference going to those interested in remaining in these programs. The Intern year will fulfill both the AOA requirement and the first year of residency training.

We offer diverse and comprehensive training opportunities to the Intern. UPMC Shadyside offers core rotations in inpatient medicine, critical care medicine, inpatient cardiology, hematology/oncology and emergency medicine. For those interested in Family Medicine, along with the strong rotations at Shadyside, our affiliation with the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee Women’s Hospital offers comprehensive training in pediatrics, care of the newborn, and obstetrics. Numerous elective and research opportunities exist both on the Shadyside campus and Oakland campus, in virtually all medical sub-specialties.

UPMC Shadyside is known throughout the region as a tertiary referral center, whose focus remains on the care of the patient. Our institution prides itself on treating the "whole person" and utilizes a multidisciplinary model where patients, physicians, and staff all contribute to comprehensive care.

We invite you to learn more about the opportunities provided by our Osteopathic Internship.

Career Goals: After completing my residency at UPMC Shadyside, I plan on staying in southwest Pennsylvania either as a hospitalist or in primary care.

Why I Chose UPMC Shadyside: UPMC Shadyside was the best fit for me as it offered a mix of community based healthcare and also exposure to a large university hospital system. I feel that upon completing my residency, I will be prepared to work in a wide variety of settings. I am also from the Pittsburgh area and knew I wanted to spend my residency years here.

Career Goals: At the present time, I am focusing on continuing to learn good medicine in order to practice good medicine. Regardless of what I ultimately do, this focus will ensure that I am successful in it. There are a couple of specialties that I am interested in pursuing, first and foremost, GI.

Why I Chose UPMC Shadyside: I rotated through UPMC Shadyside as a medical student. On day one, I was impressed by the quality residents that I worked with at Shadyside. They were examples of the type of resident that I hoped to be one day. In addition, there was such a strong emphasis on teaching and evidence based medicine, it motivated me to learn as much as I could to be a good physician. I knew that Shadyside would provide me with the tools to do that. The teaching faculty here has a vested interest in its residents' success and they are passionate about producing good physicians.
