Program Overview

Founded in 1866, UPMC Shadyside is an accredited teaching institution in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognized and approved by the State Board of Medical Licensure to provide graduate medical education programs for physicians in the practice of medicine. UPMC Shadyside is accredited by both the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and AOA to sponsor medical education training programs.

In its accredited training programs, UPMC Shadyside is responsible for training approximately 97 men and women in the career of medicine. In addition, UPMC Shadyside is a training site for medical students from across the country who must complete required clinical rotations toward Medical School requirements for graduation.

By training physicians to deliver quality health care in a challenging environment, UPMC Shadyside maintains its mission of providing cost- effective, compassionate, and professional care to the patients it serves in the community and tri-state area.

UPMC Shadyside is a major teaching hospital affiliate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Health System, providing clinical, academic, and research experience in several residency training programs.

UPMC Shadyside is an accredited teaching institution that sponsors residency training in the specialties of Internal Medicine, Family Practice, and a Transitional Year. The Hospital is the major teaching affiliate of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, providing clinical, academic, and research experience for physicians in its training programs.

Through the utilization of a variety of clinical settings including two ambulatory centers, residents in UPMC Shadyside training programs are exposed to a range of patients that afford a broad educational experience.

Fellowship Programs

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine offers fellowships in 11 different sub-specialty areas. Each division has an extremely active research program and Shadyside residents have historically participated with subsequent publications and presentations at national meetings. Rotations on the Oakland campus provide our residents opportunities to be mentored by nationally recognized faculty. Despite the increasing competitive nature of fellowships, Shadyside residents have been successful in gaining fellowships in all sub-specialties, listed here.
