How to Apply

Application Deadline

We will accept applications and supporting documents only via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application deadline for our program is mid-December.

Materials Required for All Applicants

To process your application, we require the materials listed below. All of these materials must be submitted electronically before you are invited for an interview.

  • Common ERAS application form.
  • Medical school transcript.
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 scores (and Step 2 scores when available).
  • A letter from the chair or designee of the Department of Medicine (not required for the Transitional Year Residency Program or Preliminary Year Program).
  • A minimum of two letters of recommendation from full-time faculty members, preferably two from faculty members of the Department of Medicine.
  • MSPE

Additional Information for International Medical Graduates

Applicants who are international medical graduates must have graduated from a medical school that is certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). They must have graduated from medical school within the past 5 years, and they must have a complete ERAS file that includes all of the information listed above. Traditionally, international applicants who have been the most successful in gaining admission have prior clinical training in the United States. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Medical Education Program sponsors J-1 and H-1B visas for applicants who are accepted and meet criteria for those respective visas.

For International Medical Graduates: Due to the cancellation of USMLE Step 2 CS, we will be accepting ECFMG certifications obtained through one of the six “pathways” established by the ECFMG for the 2022-2023 cycle. Additional information and updates can be found on the ECFMG website https://www.ecfmg.org/certification-requirements-2023-match/

We understand that ECFMG certification presents some unique challenges with the cancellation of Step 2 CS. As such, we will not require that applicants requiring a visa have ECFMG certification in place prior to being invited for an interview or prior to the rank certification deadline. Applicants requiring a visa will need to prove that they will meet the requirements of one of the six Pathways and that, as such, they will be ECFMG eligible by the rank certification deadline.
