Global Health: Next Steps for Our Graduates
Laura Quilter
Medical school: Indiana University School of Medicine
Global health residency graduation: 2014
Where are they now: Laura is currently an Infectious Disease fellow at the University of Washington and is pursuing a Masters of Public Health in Global Health. Her career plans include continuing to practice clinical Infectious Diseases, with research interests in international and domestic STD/HIV prevention and delivery of clinical services in underserved populations.
Ethel Wu
Medical school: Boston University School of Medicine
Global health residency graduation: 2012
Where are they now: After completing internal medicine residency in the global health track at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Ethel completed a Global Health – Hospital Medicine fellowship at UCSF and stayed on as a Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. Ethel divides her time between clinical ward attending and her interests in quality improvement and global health. In QI, her particular focus is in improving physician-to-physician communication and applying Lean methodology for safe patient discharges. Her academic interests include bringing global health to medicine residents via tailored telehealth seminars connecting with underserved sites. Additionally, she is a co-chair of the annual Global Health Bootcamp prorgam and the assistant director of curriculum for the HEAL Initiative.
Vikram Krishnasamy
Medical school: Northeast Ohio Medical University
Global health residency graduation: 2012
Where are they now: While in the global health track of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center internal medicine residency and then as a chief medical resident, Vik spent considerable time working with underserved patients and patients with HIV in both Pittsburgh and Malawi. As a result of these experiences, Vik pursued fellowship training in preventive medicine at Johns Hopkins to develop a better understanding and skill set for public health approaches to disease prevention. In 2015, Vik headed to the CDC to work as a medical officer in the Atlanta ebola operations center.
Anil Purohit
Medical school: Medical University of South Carolina
Global health residency graduation: 2011
Where are they now: Anil is currently a third year cardiology fellow at UPMC’s Heart and Vascular Institute. Building on his global health residency, he was one of the recipients for the 2014-2015 Fogarty Global Health Clinical Scholars Fellowship where he was funded to investigate cardiovascular risk in HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy in Lilongwe, Malawi. He remains interested in an academic career in cardiovascular prevention with a special interest in HIV and cardiovascular disease prevention in developing countries. He hopes to continue his current research longitudinally with the hope that it will encourage other researchers to perform research and make a huge impact in the region.
Miranda Gillespie
Medical school: University of Alabama School of Medicine
Global health residency graduation: 2010
Where are they now: While in the global health track, Miranda spent her time abroad at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi and a month as an intern with the Indian Health Service on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle, Arizona. She returned to Chinle to work as a primary care physician for two years following residency. She currently works for the Grady Health System-the publicly funded safety-net health system in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a primary care provider at the Asa Yancey Neighborhood Health Center and is also working on a project to increase routine HIV testing and linkage to HIV care at all of the Grady Neighborhood Health Centers.
