Transitional Year Curriculum

Curriculum

How our program meets the requirements for a Transitional Year:

      • Four blocks of inpatient medicine, split between Presbyterian, Shadyside, Montefiore, and the VA Hospital Pittsburgh.
      • One block of the medical intensive care unit
      • One block of adult emergency medicine
      • One block of outpatient ambulatory care at the VA Pittsburgh
      • ~ ½-1 block of night medicine
      • ~ Three to four blocks of elective time in accordance with your advanced specialty program director, ACGME requirements and personal choice.
      • Three weeks of vacation. Vacation requests are critically important and are the first thing scheduled into your TY block schedule. There is additional time off during the holidays (either the week of Christmas or New Year’s) scheduled via lottery.

Clinical Sites

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is the leading health care system in western Pennsylvania. The Oakland area of Pittsburgh is host to the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Shadyside, Montefiore, Mercy and Magee Women’s hospitals as well as the Veteran’s Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS). It is the clinical hub for UPMC Medical Education’s renowned academic residencies and fellowships. UPMC Medical Education is one of the largest Graduate Medical Education (GME) training institutions in the nation, with approximately 2,000 residents and fellows in its clinical learning environments. It is closely situated to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its health sciences campuses. Through these clinical learning environments, learners have access to a world-class education by world-class educators.
